On the Chocolate Trail A Delicious Adventure Connecting Jews Religions History Travel Rituals and Recipes to the Magic of Cacao 2nd Edition Rabbi Deborah R Prinz 9781683366768 Books Reviews

  • This is a delightful and informative book on the history of my favorite creation (aside from my children and grandchildren!) CHOCOLATE! Fascinating reading, written with love and intelligence, and some great recipes. As soon as I wipe ff the melted chocolate I was munching on whilst reading "On the Chocolate Trail A Delicious Adventure...by "Rabbi Deborah R. Prinz (how come she and her husband Mark, who eat a piece of chocolate on every page, are so much thinner than I?) I will make the Babka (p.217). Pat Boni, Ph.D
  • Deborah Prinz has issued an important second edition of her popular "On the Chocolate Trail." The first edition received incredibly enthusiastic reviews and made Prinz a frequent speaker at synagogues, community centers, chocolate conventions and even museums. A rabbi who has served both congregations and Jewish organizations, Prinz has spent years researching, studying and of course tasting chocolate all over the world. The major addition in this second addition is Chapter 10, "Gods in My Chocolate," a simultaneously whimsical and insightful look at public reaction to chocolate statues of Jesus and other religious figures. This new chapter "explores 21st century controversies about deities formed from chocolate" - not just Jesus, but also Buddha and Ganesh (the Hindu god), as well humans like Moses, Santa Claus et al. Why do these figures sculpted in chocolate elicit such visceral reactions? Also revised is the chapter on the ethics of chocolate which now includes discussions of cacao tree sustainability, honest business practices, worker justice and environmental issues. Prinz writes in an eminently readable style which does not hide the enormous research and thoughtful reflection behind the text. A must-read book.
  • I received a free review copy from Edelweiss Plus. I had recently read about Jews Pirates in the Caribbean, and this book reminded me of the other book quite a bit. This is not a cooking book, it's about the history of Jews as traders in the New World. The pirate book was the same, not about pirates but about traders. I have to applause the Jewish people ability to recover from the Spanish Inquisition and become in control of world trade. But if you want to read a book about Jewish chocolate recipes, it's not this book.
  • I really enjoyed this book about the connection between chocolate and spirituality. Although it does focus primarily on Jews and chocolate, it also explores the impact that chocolate has had on other cultures. Rabbi Prinz writes in an informative, yet very approachable style that is easy to read and comprehend. My only complaint about the book is that it is only black and white. No colour photos or illustrations to illustrate the very vibrant world of chocolate. Great recipes, though.
  • Debbie Prinz walks you through some of the most interesting — and unknown — stories about chocolate and religion. I learned so much about the history of chocolate, such as that Jews probably brought it from Spain to France. Debbie has delved into a unique area of research that not many have tackled before, and the results are fun, entertaining, and informative!
  • An important read, narrative based storytelling with a well balanced - not dense - dose of historical accuracy and research. Absolutely recommended in that it tells the piece of history that has often been omitted from textbooks and industry readings, that of the Jews' role in chocolate. Although also referenced are many faiths, people and places -- as it is certain there is never a singular story of chocolate.
  • Fantastic!! I highly recommend this book. Reading it made me feel like I was traveling through France and Spain and doing chocolate tastings along the way!
