You aren’t what you think! For teens with negative thinking habits, a licensed psychologist and a health journalist offer cognitive restructuring—a simple and effective cognitive behavioral approach to help you break free from the nine most common negative thinking habits that typically result in feeling sad, worried, angry, and stressed.

This workbook offers a powerful technique called cognitive restructuring to help you reframe your thoughts, regulate your emotions, become a more flexible thinker, and stop letting your thoughts define who you are and how you feel. You’ll learn to target the nine specific kinds of negative thinking habits that can cause you to worry or feel bad, such as the I can’t habit, the doom and gloom habit, the all or nothing habit, the jumping to conclusions habit, and more!

Each chapter will walk you through simple explanations of each kind of negative thought, and offers real-life examples—as well as the sorts of behaviors, emotions, and bodily sensations that might be expected. You'll also gain an understanding of unhelpful or unrealistic thoughts, how to challenge them, how to replace them with more realistic and helpful thoughts, and an action plan for moving forward.

By recognizing these negative thinking habits, you’ll feel more in control and less anxious and sad. Most importantly, you’ll be able to see yourself and the world more clearly. Your thoughts don’t have to define who you are and how you experience life. The transdiagnostic approach in this book will show you how to kick negative thinking habits to the curb for good!

This book has been selected as an Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Self-Help Book Recommendation—an honor bestowed on outstanding self-help books that are consistent with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) principles and that incorporate scientifically tested strategies for overcoming mental health difficulties. Used alone or in conjunction with therapy, our books offer powerful tools readers can use to jump-start changes in their lives.

"The beginning checklist about thinking errors is helpful, and I like the way the workbook is organized, with each chapter corresponding to a thinking error. But the way the material is presented...the clients I used the chapters with just did not connect with the material (the stories, the questions after). The workbook also does not do a good job of connecting the material to real life situations, and the questions it asks to try to do so are just not engaging (at least not for the teens I used this with)."

  • As a clinical psychologist working in childhood anxiety and OCD, I am always on the look out for good workbooks. Many times kids and teens dismiss workbooks that are available because the examples do not reflect their experience or their complexity. In Dr. Alvord's books and workshops, you can tell she is someone who talks with kids, likes kids, and works with kids. So she knows how they think when in distress and how to help them find their way out. Dr. Alvord and her co-author Ann McGrath add a book that is really needed. Many kids or teens have negative thinking that is a source of their difficultlies either with no diagnosis or in the context of anxiety and depression. By offering separate sections on the different thinking traps kids, teens, parents or therapiist can focus their work with practical suggestions. A really helpful and useful resource
  • My son has benefitted from working with Dr. Alvord tremendously. For those that don't have this opportunity, her book gives you many of her tools to help your teen. This book is easy to follow and has insightful and age-appropriate activities for teens. I am also a school social worker and will use this book with my students in the Fall. Also, check out her resilience builder book- another must have! Thank you, Dr. Alvord for all you do!
  • This book is an excellent resource for teens facing one of the greatest obstacles we all know Negative Thinking. “Conquer Negative Thinking for Teens” is written with skill, empathy and helpful exercises so that, by the time you are finished, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a more realistic and proactive individual.

Chock full of practical steps, useful tips and examples, Alvord and McGrath offer material to overcome obstacles and anxieties and provide a clear path to a more confident life.
  • As a therapist who works with teens, this book will be an invaluable resource. The concepts are presented in a concise manner, illustrated with interesting and varied examples. The easy to use activities that follow are engaging and extremely helpful. This unique book effectively explores negative thinking across diagnoses and therefore can be used by any teen struggling with distorted thoughts. Mary Alvord has provided a very well written, user friendly book that offers teens hope and a path to a healthier future.
  • The beginning checklist about thinking errors is helpful, and I like the way the workbook is organized, with each chapter corresponding to a thinking error. But the way the material is presented...the clients I used the chapters with just did not connect with the material (the stories, the questions after). The workbook also does not do a good job of connecting the material to real life situations, and the questions it asks to try to do so are just not engaging (at least not for the teens I used this with).
  • I purchased this book for my 12 (almost 13) year old daughter. The day it came she started working right away on it... I started noticing a difference in her by the second day!!! It’s been getting better every day!
  • What makes this book great, in my opinion, is the structure of it. The authors divide up negative thinking into nine types. This enables teens to focus on just the one chapter(s) that applies best to them. Each chapter has helpful tidbits and, importantly, exercises for readers to do. And the writing/editing was very smart in its approach -- the authors make great use of bullet points and charts and generally a very accessible style. A very smart approach -- highly recommended!
  • This is a wonderful addition to anyone's self-help library. The authors demonstrate a deep understanding of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and explain concepts in a developmentally-appropriate manner, without jargon. They help teens understand their thoughts, identify how they are being upset by negative thinking, and provide practical steps on how to break the cycle of self-defeating thoughts. The exercises are poignant and helpful, empowering adolescents to take control of their thoughts and emotions, and take action in a way that maximizes potential success (and cope with less than desirable outcomes). I've used this with my CBT patients, who reported finding it very helpful and down to earth.
