Flyfisher Guide to Michigan NEW EDITION Jon Osborn 0809206392175 Books Reviews

  • If you fish rivers in Michigan for smallmouth or trout, this is a must have! If you don’t buy it, that’s your loss. More fish for me!
  • Awesome read
  • I have Flyfisher’s guides to Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming among others, and this guide to Michigan is the least helpful. It does have good color maps, but it’s description of each river and where/how to fish each river section is lacking. My other guide books detail where to fish on the river, access points, and fishing tactics at different river locations; this book has none of that. The section on the Muskegon River, which is a very large and diverse river with native trout and seasonal anadromous fish had minimal details or facts and consisted mostly of anecdotal accounts of the fishing. I was very disappointed with this book given the quality of the other books in this series.
  • My husband owns this book and an edition from years ago. He used to travel up North with nothing but that book, a map book, and of course his fly rod. The new edition has all the great information from the previous edition, and much improved photography and mapping (including GPS coordinates). Its amazing how much rivers can change in a decades time, this book keeps on top of the changes.
  • Jon Osborn has done us all a favor in writing this book. What I appreciate most is that it occupies a lot of space. While its pages hold concise information on rivers, methods, and other details that are invaluable to the fly fisher who takes their craft seriously, Osborn's book helps its readers place fly fishing in a greater context. These pages hold stories, poetry, visual art, and history in a way that is meaningful and truly fun to read. In that way this book is just as at home on the coffee table in your home as it is on your car dashboard as you head north. Jon has put a lot of himself in these pages, and they've left me more excited and equipped to spend my time on the rivers in Michigan.

It's beautiful and true to its title.
  • Guides like these have been my bibles for checking out new water for many years. That said, this new edition sets a whole new standard for covering the details. I'd also give honorable mention for the author's fun style and top notch pictures. If you fish, paddle, or anything else involving MI rivers then I'd highly recommend this book.
  • For the fly fisherman or woman in your life, this book will delight. With maps and details, the book is informative. With photos and good writing, the book is artful. Your fisher-person will enjoy reading and displaying this book. Flyfisher's Guide to Michigan is a great gift to give.
  • All you need for access points, helpful patterns, and interesting tidbits about Michigan's rivers. I've already used it to discover new water and to consider water I never gave a thought to before. I plan to keep it in my car so I'll waste less time getting to spots and to make the most of the time I have. It's also just fun to read and dream about all the places I can go.
