The Emmy award-winning news anchor of Outnumbered Overtime with Harris Faulkner and co-host of the talk show Outnumbered shares the lessons she learned growing up in a military family paying homage to the military ideals that shaped her and showing how everyone can benefit from bringing the wisdom of military service into their lives.

Born into a military family, Harris Faulkner revered her father, a decorated career officer who served three tours of duty in Vietnam and raised his children with the values and ideals of the U.S. military. Accompanying him from posting to posting, young Harris experienced firsthand how success in life was rooted in the knowledge, integrity, and leadership that came from her military surroundings. Indeed, these formative lessons in leadership and work ethic became the guiding principles for her career as a journalist, lessons she credits with her rise to become one of the top hosts on Fox News.

Now, she shares the advice, wisdom, and tools that she absorbed through her military upbringing, examining how these ideals have shaped her professional and personal outlook and how everyone can incorporate them into their own lives. Using her father’s career as the backdrop to her experience, she explores the lessons in courage, duty, patriotism, and responsibility that helped her succeed, demonstrating the truth to the axiom that in military families everyone serves—together. Along the way she also interviews current and former military families, generals and other officers, and tells stories from her father’s career to illuminate how and why the message and mission of the military is so effective at changing lives both on and off the battlefield.

Illustrated with sixteen pages of never-before-seen photos of her early life and career, this instructive book, part memoir, part motivational life guide, reminds us of our most important values—the keys to a successful life.

"nice to see an account of the very real positive aspects of growing up in a military family. I am about the same age as her father and had a similar deployment pattern, kids and my wife died after my retirement . the observations and lessons she relates ring true a i could identify with the situations she recalled. I was particularly struck by the description of how her father managed the terminal illness and passing of his wife. It was a Paralympic mind although in my case it was Alzheimer's over 10 years. It was a mission for me too and most of my civilian friends didn't get it. I have been a fan for some time and now one why."

9 Rules of Engagement A Military Brat Guide to Life and Success Harris Faulkner 9780062697523 Books Reviews

  • This is not a political book, neither democrat or republican, liberal or conservative. IT IS A LIFE-SUCCESS BOOK. Faulkner’s dedication says it best “My deepest gratitude to my parents, Shirley and Bob. You taught me everything there is to know about courage, grace, and love.”

Faulkner has an expert and personal way to share those life lessons. Critics -- hers is NOT a FOX news approach; it is the approach of leading memoir writers and teachers-writers-leaders in the personal achievement field. I’ve read and listened to hundreds of motivational-success books and programs in that field. This book is at the top of my admired and follow-through list. I know it will continue to inspire and change me for the better.

Just look at the table of contents and the 9 RULES and see what could zero in on your needs and interests. “Deal with Your Demons…Devise Your Mission…Unleash the Power of Integrity…Think Like a General.” Best of all is Rule #9 – “When Things Fall Apart, Believe You Have the Answer.” First hand Faulkner witnessed in her father’s life of service “a whole range of feelings from disappointment, frustration, and anger to profound sadness.” I can tune into that and the stories she shares reach my heart as well as my mind.

This book promises to help me “be strong in the broken places” and how to “learn by heart.” Faulkner shows how she dealt with racism and gender bias, being a black woman. From her sharing these lessons, I am strengthened. In fact, at times I was near tears with the courage and wisdom she shared with me. How she reacted to and dealt with the death of her mother, her dear dad’s wife, took me over the edge with her honesty and faith.

Out of all her truthfully-told personal experiences, Faulkner is helping me “build my emotional foundation.” With the personal losses I’ve experienced in the last few years, I really need that. It’s like Harris Faulkner is talking to me with with her heart and soul. Thanks.

NOTE Some readers of this review, and some who haven’t read it at all, will automatically treat it negatively because of Faulkner’s tie-in with FOX NEWS. Others will do so because of their political hatreds. If that’s you, you lose. Sorry to be so direct. But think about it, will you, please? I want you to be blessed as I was and will continue to be.
  • Like everything else in this world of divisive opinions, it's either a 5 star (likely) or a 1 star rating. Kris & Meah need to hurry into their safe spaces before they experience another Snowflake meltdown. Read the book, girls! It was written to help YOU.
  • A fellow Brat still learning. Just finished 9 Rules of Engagement, to be reminded of what my WWI and WW!! grandfather tried to teach me. He also was a Colonel in the army. I was just a little kid and did not pay enough attention to his stories. This book taught me what my grandfather would have loved to share with me as did Harris' father lovingly taught her and now us. Glad that this book is on my to be available to re-read many times as I go through my own pathway as a writer. This is a must read for both men and women to handle the negativity that the media is sending out. This book is for all of us.

  • Smart writer with much to say.
  • great book by an intelligent and talented journalist.
  • Also a military brat, I was curious to see if we had similar experiences. Harris is engaging, expressive and I chuckled from her stories that reminded me of situations I should have handled differently or I wished for the wise counsel she had. I have had a fondness for Mrs. Faulkner due to FOX and wish her continued success in the future.
  • I loved this book as it was like reading about my life experiences and the lessons I learned from being a military brat, military officer, and a military wife. Harris Faulkner and I not only shared life experiences but were assigned in some of the same places...Stuttgart Germany (Ludwigsburg)...Leavenworth, Ks, have been to Ft. McPherson in Atl (no longer really exists ( is not a Tyler Perry tv/film Location I believe) and even knew some of the same people like Gen. Bob Livsey "the Stick".., it is a good easy read whether military or not...good rules to live by..
